Stars with a Cause

Angelina and Brad, Bono, Oprah. Even Ginger Spice. Everyone these days is a humanitarian. Now even Bollywood stars are getting in on the action.

John Abraham, Preity Zinta, Amitabh Bachan, will be featured in a short video entitled “One Life, No Price”, which aims to raise awareness about human trafficking in India. Anil Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Nana Patekar and Katrina Kaif are all also recording messages as well.

The UN is partnering with the Bollywood film industry as part of a larger concept entitled UN GIFT (Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking).

Unfortunately India has one of the highest rates of trafficking in South Asia. Over 100,000 women and children are forced into prostitution and slavery every year.

Thankfully these famous faces can bring the much needed attention to a very serious cause.

Find out more info and how you can help.

Hot Wax

First Amitabh. Then Aishwarya. Last year it was Shah Rukh. Next in line to be immortalized in wax? None other than Bollywood babe Salman Khan.

People Magazine’s 7th best looking man in the world beat out several other Bollywood stars including icon Madhuri Dixit, Abishek Bachan, and Hrithik Roshan, in a poll conducted by the museum and Ikonz magazine. The big unveiling takes place on January 15th, when Bollywood fans can line up at the Madame Tussaud’s London to ogle the actor en wax.

Now if you’re anything like the rest of us, you’re probably wondering if the famously buff actor is going to be shirtless. Alas, the answer is no. According to Madame Tussaud’s, the actor will be clad in jeans and a white tee. Bummer.

Well at least he can finally be with Ash .

New Year New Candy

Another year, another calendar. Yes, we all have our Blackberries, PDAs, and Treos, but theres nothing like a little eye candy to start off the new year.

First up is the Maxim-style Kingfisher swimsuit calendar. This year the ladies will be showcasing their assets against the backdrop of Indias various lush backdrops, including Havelock Island, Nubra Valley, Mukut Mandir, and the beaches of Goa.

If shirtless guys are your cup of tea, check out Dabboo Ratnanis annual celebrity calendar this time with men only.

This year you can feast your eyes on the likes of Shah Rukh, Salman, Abishek, John, and more.

Lastly, if youre in the mood for something a little more action packed, check out photographer Subi Samuels Alchemy calendar, featuring Bollywood stars like Priyanka Chopra and Hrithik Roshan in comic book-style shots.

Happy 2008!!

Bollywood Blogger

Now we've really heard it all. Just when you thought Bollywood's audience couldn't possibly get any bigger, out pops yet another seemingly random fan.

Anu Heikola, a 29 year old from Finland, is absolutely in love with all things Bollywood. And she happily blogs about it on her site, anuradha.vuodatus.net, complete with a picture of Anu in a silver sari and bindi. Ever the devotee, Anu even changed her name to Anuradha in her undying support of Bollywood.

In fact, Anuradha doesn't understand Hindi, but it doesn't seem to matter. The romantic, song-and-dance appeal is what draws her in. Although the blog is in Finnish, you can check out pictures of all the Bollywood heavyweights, Kareena, Aishwarya, Akshay, Salman, Abishek, and of course Shah Rukh, who seems to have a signficantly higher number of pictures on the site than his colleagues.

Hmmm, does someone have a little SRK crush?

Party All The Time

Another Saturday night, another bar, in the newly hip-suddenly-gentrified-cooler-than-thou part of town. Blah, Blah, Blah. Forget the same old same old and impress your friends (and yourself quite frankly) with a fantasically awesome Bollywood shindig right in your own home.

Now it goes without saying that we desis enjoy a little bit of sparkle and color. So hide that Ikea couch with a few carefully chosen saris (no, not your sister’s best wedding sari) or drape them over your windows as curtains, throw some mirrored pillows on the floor, and hang up a couple of old Bollywood posters.

Next, light some vanilla and sandalwood candles, to evoke a sexy exotic feel. Rent some classic Bollywood flicks such as Andaaz or Howrah Bridge (go Helen!) to play in the background and keep the music flowing with some mellow tunes from Talvin Singh’s latest CD, Sweetbox.

Lastly, and mostly importantly whip up some shrimp kebabs from www.barwachi.com and some Mangopolitans.

Mangopolitan
4 parts Finlandia Mango Vodka
2 parts Triple Sec
2 parts Mango Juice
1 part grenadine

Keep going and pretty soon you’ll be giving Martha a run for her money.
