Smoking Hot

Nothing like a little toke to take the edge off. Thank goodness for our favorite drug dealer “Sanjay” played by Maulik Pancholy on the Showtime series “Weeds”.

Watch Sanjay freak out when the cops come a knockin.

Not enough Maulik for you? Don’t fret. The multi-tasking actor stars on not one but 2 TV series. You can also catch Maulik on NBC’s “30 Rock” with Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin.

Which is why we absolutely LOOOVE BBC program “Desi DNA.” The show focuses on “the new generation of Asians breaking the mould and seeking out the hottest in Asian clubs, fashion, music and lifestyle in the UK and abroad”.

Watch as presenter Nikki Bedi explores the world of independent Indian film. From premarital sex to homosexuality, to other taboo themes, desi arthouse cinema covers it all.

Some Kind of Wino

Chapati, channa, and….wine?

Master sommelier and television personality Alpana Singh is more than just another pretty face. Born and raised in wine country Monterey, CA, it might make sense that Alpana Singh would develop an interest in the tasty beverage. Except that wine isn’t exactly the beverage of choice for most desis.

Which makes Alpana that much more unique. While waiting tables during college, Alpana discovered her love for wine and decided to pursue her goal of becoming a Master Sommelier, passing the exam in 2003, (only 3% pass) and becoming the youngest woman to be introduced into the Court of Master Sommeliers.

She then went on to serve as sommelier at a variety of 5 star restaurants and has been cited as one of best sommeliers in Wine Advocate, as well as receiving mentions in Bon Appetit, Wine and Spirits Magazine, and Epicurious, where she recommends some of her top wine choices. Among them are Castle Rock 2004 Chardonnay, A-Z Pinot Noir 2003, and Kunin Zinfandel Paso Robles 2003. Delish.

And when she’s not busy kicking ass as a sommelier, she hosts Check Please!, a
Chicago based food review show. And in her spare time, she wrote a book entitled Alpana Pours.

Makes passing the MCATs sound easy, huh?

Too Spicy

She’s done it again. Make us drool that is.

Season 3 of the eagerly awaited (for us foodies anyway) Top Chef debuts June 13th at 10pm on Bravo, with our favorite model-turned-actress-turned-chef, Padma Lakshmi playing hostess with the most-ess.

For those of you who haven’t tuned in yet, Top Chef pits 15 contestants against each other in a series of culinary trials and tribulations eliminating one chef each week, until of course the most awesome TOP CHEF is left standing.

If the idea of people getting heated over who bought the last chili pepper, doesn’t excite you, surely Padma will. After graduating from college, and modeling for the likes of Vogue and Versace, Padma hosted 2 cooking shows, penned a successful cookbook entitled Easy Exotic and became a syndicated columnist for the NY Times. Another pretty face? We think not.

Next up for Padma is another cookbook Tangy, Tart, Hot and Sweet releasing later this year and a film directed by Deepa Mehta and starring John Abraham entitled "Exclusion" releasing in 2008.

Whet your appetite with a smack down between Seasons 1 and 2 airing June 6th at 10pm. Then catch the real deal June 13th at 10pm.
